A totalitarian environment is a controlled society that is ruled by a type of strict governing system. With limited freedom, authorities virtually control all aspects of people’s rights. Within the story of “The Handmaids Tale”, Atwood shares a fictional story during times of war, which follows this type of totalitarian structure. A regime has split up families and use women in order to be impregnated. The events similar to Atwood’s story could become a reality in today’s society. We could be facing a conspiracy theory that is so huge, that most people will have a hard time believing it.
So how can a government be able to control millions of people against their own will? Trying to take away the freedom of Americans in this day and age will be much more of a challenge. Most people will put up a fight, and some would rather die than have their rights taken away. If a Nazi like regime did take over, people would be forced to obey or face punishment and death. One of the best ways to make people cooperate is to control them with fear. For example, Atwood tells about six bodies hanging from hooks for everyone to see. The bodies are hung for several days to get the attention of as many people as possible. (32) This scare tactic lets everyone know what will happen if the rules are broken. In “The Handmaids Tale”, the rest of the world seemed oblivious to what is really happening inside this new society. The regime wants to keep the truth a secret, and makes others think that what coincides inside is a type of willing religion. The longer it can be hidden from the rest of the world, the more powerful they can

A worldwide conspiracy known as the “New World Order” has been talked about for decades. This is organized by the most wealthy and powerful people from around the world. Their intention is to create one powerful government that runs the entire world, and have complete control over every human being. The main goal of this one world government is to drastically reduce the population of humans on the planet. With improvements of living conditions and health services, a human’s average life expectancy has become longer. With decreased death rates, there is an increase of birth rates. (Naik) Besides environmental problems of overpopulation, the less people in the world, the easier the New World Order can take control.
Many believe that the New World Order was originated from the Illuminati. Forming in the late 1700’s, Illuminati are one of the oldest secret societies that. The majority of the Illuminati members are consisted of the highest ranked of several committees. Illuminati are structured like a pyramid where the elite are on top, and do the organizing and planning without the involvement of the lower ranked. The Illuminati try to keep their meetings secret to where there is little or no public awareness. (Adachi) There are a number of committees and counsels at the top of the pyramid that are very powerful and create the goals of the societ
y. Dr. John Coleman writes in his book “Conspirators’ Hierarchy” about the purpose of one such committee known as “Committee 300”."A One World Government and one-unit monetary system, under permanent non-elected hereditary oligarchists who self-select from among their numbers in

the form of a feudal system as it was in the Middle Ages. In this One World entity, population will be limited by restrictions on the number of children per family, diseases, wars, famines, until 1 billion people who are useful to the ruling class, in areas which will be strictly and clearly defined, remain as the total world population. There will be no middle class, only rulers and the servants. All laws will be uniform under a legal system of world courts practicing the same unified code of laws, backed up by a One World Government police force and a One World unified military to enforce laws in all former countries where no national boundaries shall exist. The system will be on the basis of a welfare state; those who are obedient and subservient to the One World Government will be rewarded with the means to live; those who are rebellious will simple be starved to death or be declared outlaws, thus a target for anyone who wishes to kill them. Privately owned firearms or weapons of any kind will be prohibited" (161).
The Illuminati can be compared to the regime that is controlling Gilead. It would have to take a great deal of planning and sophistication to pull off such control. The regime has kept the truth from the rest of the world just as the Illuminati have held its secrets.
The complexity and volume of the New World Order is constantly growing with more corporate and political leaders globally. These consist of oil barons, international bankers, pharmaceutical cartels, the royal family of England, and other world leaders. These groups of elites manipulate governments and media worldwide. The New World Order will be under a

socialism government where your rights will be derived from the state and not the individual. Proof of this act is written in the documents of the United Nations. "The United Nation’s goal is to reduce population selectively by encouraging abortion, forced sterilization, and control human reproduction, and regards two-thirds of the human population as excess baggage, with 350,000 people to be eliminated per day" (Cousteau). The goal is to go from a population of nearly seven billion and reduce it to about 2.5 billion.
This New World Order plan would be a totalitarian government similar to Atwoods story, but to a much greater extreme. Although “The Hand Maids Tale” is a fictional story, many believe the New World Order is not. With as much documented evidence as there is, how can it be considered a conspiracy theory? The majority of people are too busy watching T.V. and getting sucked into the media that they are oblivious to what is really happening. The more people that becomes aware of this rise of governmental power, the better chance that we as the people can prevent such an inhumane act.
Margaret Atwood knows that there have been, and are societies around the world that follow a totalitarian type of life style. In most of these types of societies that exist today, women are the minorities having no control and little freedom. I believe she has used real life events as a sort of guideline to her book, such as Nazi Germany or Soviet Union. Today there are still countries run by one political party like North Korea, China, and Cuba. She writes this story so the reader can think about what can really happen in America. As a woman writer she

feels obligated to stand up for not only woman but the rights of all Americans. An act such as the New World Order would forever change life as we know it.
